SMU First-Year Transition Programme

The Student Success Centre (SSC) has designed a two-week programme in July 2025, to provide you with the support and resources you need for a smooth academic transition to SMU. 

This two-week programme includes:

  • Head Start: UniReady (30 June-1 July), ConnectReady (2 July), Get READy, Write Now! (3-4 July)
  • Write Ahead (7-11 July)
  • Quant Skills for Management (e-Learn course)

Head Start

UniReady (2 days)

Gain invaluable insights into academic success by learning how to:

  • Communicate effectively and understand your personal communication style.
  • Navigate SMU’s learning platforms with ease.
  • Hone your research skills and complete LIB001 Library Research Skills ahead of schedule.
  • Interact with alumni and seniors who have gone through the same journey.
  • Provide you access to a peer support network.
     
ConnectReady (1 day)

As you prepare to forge new relationships at the start of the school year, we want to equip you with the right mindset for engaging with peers and stakeholders:

  • Build strong connections by networking with peers and actively participating in class discussions.
  • Cultivate positive and respectful interactions in your relationships.
  • Develop effective time and stress management skills to maintain a healthy balance between academics, social life, and self-care.
Get READy, Write Now! (2 days)

To succeed in your first year, you will need to be able to read critically and write effectively. This is especially true in your Core Curriculum modules such as Writing and Reasoning, and Big Questions. Join us for this workshop and learn how to:

  • Formulate a Clear Position
  • Evaluate Secondary Sources
  • Create Coherent Written Pieces
  • Use Appropriate Referencing Style

Write Ahead

Write Ahead is a one-week writing module created specifically for freshmen of Elevate@SMU. This immersive experience is dedicated to honing writing proficiency and fostering effective communication in academic and professional contexts.

Throughout the week-long course, participants will engage in activities and discussions that will help them learn to adapt their writing to diverse contexts and audiences. From understanding the precise purposes, and choosing the appropriate structures, to crafting clear, concise, and coherent compositions, the module is crafted to empower learners with essential writing tools for success at SMU.

The supportive learning environment, personalized guidance, and hands-on activities will enable learners to explore the nuances of effective communication, and embrace the art of conveying ideas with clarity and impact. 

Quant Skills for Management (This eLearn course has to be completed by 15 August 2025)

This blended learning course is designed to equip you with essential quantitative skills for management, covering algebra, calculus, and statistics. It offers an accelerated learning experience to enhance your ability to solve equations, comprehend functions, and analyze data; with a particular emphasis on practical applications in Excel and Python, helping you grasp fundamental concepts and perform simple calculations while connecting them to real-world scenarios.

The programme includes weekly consultation sessions with Professor Liu Peng from 21 July – 15 August 2025 to support your learning. These consultations will be aligned with the learning materials, providing an opportunity to clarify concepts, address challenges, and reinforce key topics covered in the course. Students are required to attend at least one consultation session

To maximize your learning experience, students are strongly encouraged to complete the course by August and take advantage of these free consultations.
